Beating the odds

If you follow the news, you know that mortgage foreclosures have been on the front page frequently in recent months, and you would think that adjustable rates and subprime lending are the primary culprit.

You may not know that the odds of losing your home because of a disability of the primary wage-earner are even greater. According to the Federal Housing Administration, disability is the cause of 48 percent of home mortgage foreclosures. Only 3 percent of foreclosures result from the death of the breadwinner. Of particular relevance to many: 48 percent of small businesses fail because of the disability of the owner or key employee.
