Glaziers overcome challenges to install ample glass at T.F. Green Airport

The basics: Contract glaziers from Massey's Plate Glass & Aluminum Inc., Branford, Conn., overcame several notable challenges on the T.F. Green Airport Intermodal Project in Providence, R.I., a $267 million transportation hub that allows commuter rail service to T.F. Green Airport and Warwick, R.I., according to the Rhode Island Airport Corp. Among the challenges: installing the unitized curtain wall and composite panel over heavily traveled roads; completing installation at night; installing architectural louvers over the Amtrak train tracks active line from Boston to Washington, D.C.; and installing the curtain wall on the TEI bridge over the general public departure lanes at the entrance to the airport, which required closing traffic lanes.

The glass and systems:45,000 square feet of unitized curtain wall, 40,000 square feet of stick curtain wall and 60,000 square feet of composite panel. There are 10 different 1-inch insulating glass types on the skywalk bridge and stair tower: Sunglass No. 2 surface and clear; Versalux Blue and z50 on No. 3 surface; Versalux Blue 2000 and gray with Solarban 60 on No. 3; Versalux Blue 2000 and Greylite; Versalux Green and clear Solarban 60 on No. 3 surface; Versalux Green 2000 and clear with Solarban 60 on No. 3 surface; Versalux Green 2000 and Grey with Solarban 60 on No. 3 surface; Versalux Green 2000 and Greylite; Versalux Blue 2000 with Satin on No. 2 surface and clear with Solarban 60 on No. 3 surface; clear with Satin on No. 2 surface and clear with Solarban 60 on No. 3 surface. Glass make-ups for the TEI Building comprise: 1-inch clear with Solarban 60 on No. 2 surface and clear laminated; standard spandrel. Glass make-ups for the CSO Building comprise: 1-inch clear with Solarban 60 on No. 2 surface and Clear; standard spandrel.
