The basics: The domed skylight crowning the large atrium at The Alfond Inn at Rollins College has become a key identifying feature of the boutique hotel in Winter Park, Fla. Spanning nearly 39 feet in diameter, this multi-slope, dome skylight with cupola and finial is framed in aluminum with a bronze finish. The Alfond Inn embraces the surrounding campus’ Spanish- Mediterranean revival style: softly curved corners, sturdy columns, white stucco and cast stone walls, wrought iron accents, high ceilings and as much natural light as possible.
The players: Owner, Rollins College; co-developer/operator, The Olympia Cos.; architect, interior designer and landscape architect, Baker Barrios Architects Inc.; general contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie; skylight system manufacturer and installer, Super Sky Products Enterprises LLC; glass fabricator, Viracon; skylight system finisher, Linetec
The glass and systems: To aleviate the Florida sunshine's solar heat gain, the skylight incorporates high-performance, heat-strengthened 1 5/16-inch VE3-2M insulating laminated glass from Viracon. Linetec used Valspar 70 percent PVDF Fluropon in bronze to finish the aluminum-framed skylight. The company safely captures and destroys the liquid paints’ volatile organic compounds content before the finished material arrives at the job site. Valspar’s Fluropon coatings are weather-resistant, meeting the most demanding, exterior, architectural specification AAMA 2605-11, Linetec reports.
