Great Glazing: Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School
The basics: Seeking to increase energy efficiency, Apple Education Services, owners of an old elementary school building that now houses the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School in Buffalo, N.Y., chose to replace 460 outdated windows with tilt & turn replacement windows. Manufactured with a bronze exterior color and a white interior, the windows provide the building with a refreshed new look while still blending well with its existing aesthetics. The transformation was completed just in time for the 2013 school year.
The players: Owner, Apple Education Services; general contractor, United Construction; contract glazier, Nate Construction Co.; window systems supplier, The Earthwise Group LLC; window manufacturer, Earthwise member company PVC Industries; glass manufacturer, PPG Industries
The glass and systems: Building owners chose Earthwise Revolution Tilt & Turn windows for the 20-foot wide window openings throughout the school building. Revolution Tilt & Turn Windows feature a seven-chamber thermal structure, and are made up of 7/8-inch and 3/16-inch, low-E, argon gas-filled annealed glass, in a window unit capable of achieving an R-value of 7+ and a C-100 rating. Revolution tilts in and locks for secure, indirect ventilation, and has minimal frame and sash sightlines.
