The basics: Sustainability was top of mind for architects of the new ambulatory care clinic at the University of Iowa Health Care facility in Coralville. The clinic addition matches the eco-friendly design of the overall medical campus, utilizing custom vertical sunshades and low-emissivity glass that offers light and comfort to occupants, without a dark exterior tint.

The players: Architect, Neumann Monson Architects; general contractor, JE Dunn Construction; contract glazier, InterClad, an Egan Co.; glass fabricator, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope; metal framing systems supplier, EFCO Corp.; glass manufacturer, Guardian Industries

The glass and systems: Architects specified EFCO XTherm E-Shade 12-inch vertical and horizontal sunshades to add solar control and help reduce the HVAC loads. EFCO also supplied its 5600 pressure-glazed curtain wall, S402 storefront and D500 aluminum swing entrance doors for the UI clinic. InterClad installed 1-inch Guardian SuperNeutral 62 in clear for the building's vision glass, and 1-inch Guardian SN 62 in clear on the No. 2 surface and Oldcastle's satin etch on the No. 3 surface for the translucent glass. The Guardian glass offered the client high VLT with a low solar heat gain coefficient.
