Great Glazing: United Hospital Center

The basics: The new 692,000-square-foot, 292-bed United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, W.V., was designed to maximize patient comfort, staff and operational efficiencies, and flexibility, according to architect representatives.

The players: Architect, Gresham, Smith and Partners; general contractor, Balfour Beatty; glass fabricator, Viracon; glazing framing supplier, United Architectural Metals; glazing contractor, D-M Products Inc.

The glass and systems: More than 110,000 square feet of exterior unitized curtain wall, pressure wall, storefronts and low-emissivity insulating glass. The interior work consisted of decorative glass, mirrors, psychiatric windows and more than 4,000 square feet of custom glass handrails.
