Harrah’s unveils glass dome-covered pool area

May 22, 2007

“This was an installation with a lot of firsts. It was the first dome [Novum] has ever done, the first time [Novum] used the system they used and the first time they ever used that glazing detail. That combined with the size of the job and a tight timeline made it a challenge.” Erik Chretien, vice president, R.E. Krug Corp.

The basics: May 25, Harrah’s Casino and Resort in Atlantic City will open The Pool, a 172,000-square foot glass dome-enclosed pool complex. The 208-foot diameter dome rises 50 feet.
The players: Architects, Friedmutter Group, Steelman Partners, both of Atlantic City; general contractor, TN Ward Co., Ardmore, Pa.; glass installer, R.E. Krug Corp., North Tonawanda, N.Y.; dome supplier, Novum Structures, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; glass and frame supplier, Novum Structures (China) Co., Beijing.
The glass: Clear, insulating glass with low-emissivity coating on the No. 2 surface, a laminated glass interior layer with clear polyvinyl butyral interlayer and a tempered outerlayer. That glass is used structurally because it is point fixed at the edges with the ECG-System.
