The North American solar market— though still in its infancy —offers opportunity for glass and glazing companies at all levels, from manufacturers to installers. Our goal when putting together this "solar issue" was to provide a clear picture of how the market is organized and the business potential it presents, beginning with the attached illustration.

Although only 1.89 percent of commercial buildings in the United States currently incorporate solar or photovoltaic systems, the solar market here is expected to grow, bolstered by government incentives and new technologies

"The glass and glazing industry needs to step into this," says Steve Coonen, a BIPV consultant in Green Valley, Calif. "This is a business opportunity." If your company has already taken advantage of this opportunity, please relay your experience to solar@glass.org.
