The urethane bead securing the windshield is a little thick along the sides and top. If using a cold knife to cut out the glass, you might need to use a blade that is the next size up in length. Also note, the top gap is close to the pinchweld wall, so care must be taken during cutout to avoid damaging the pinchweld wall.

The side moldings on this vehicle use the gradating clip system employed by Honda vehicles. These clips posed problems when they were first introduced and are still difficult to release without damage. However, with practice and patience, they are salvageable.

Quarter glass removal and replacement instructions

The following installation was performed on a 2008 vehicle, but all models in the BMW 1 Series through 2011 use this quarter glass. Before beginning the quarter glass removal, make sure you have the right trim for the vehicle. The part comes with flat black, glossy black and chrome lower trim.

The A-pillar molding on this vehicle extends from the fender to the back glass and is clipped down with a two-clip system: one clip attached to the body and one inserted into the molding. There are two ways to release the molding from the vehicle: pry out the molding clip from the body clip, or slide the molding from the clips. The latter method might prevent damage to the clips.

There is plenty of room to use a cold knife to cut out the windshield on this vehicle; however, due to the U-shaped molding, it is recommended that a power tool not be used for interior cutout. When removing the cowl panel, you will need to release the eight retainers on the underside of the panel using a door pad tool or long pry tool. Be careful, as these retainers can break in cold weather. Also watch out for the top and side molding.
