Pilkington Automotive to close Clinton plant
October 22, 2009
Workers at the Pilkington Automotive glass plant in Clinton [Mich.] were told Monday [Oct. 19] that the facility will be closing.
Pilkington’s owners, the NSG Group based in Tokyo, announced the closure in a news release Tuesday [Oct. 20].
The company notified the affected employees at meetings Monday at the plant. The Clinton facility has approximately 130 employees; the phased closure will be complete by the end of summer 2010.
“We are devastated, heartbroken for the employees who will be losing their jobs in this tight economy,” said Clinton Village Manager Kevin Cornish. “We had no indication something like this was going to happen.”
The company said the bad economy and its effect on the auto industry have hurt its North American business, according to an Oct.21 Adrian Daily Telegram report.
