The major float glass headlines around the world, from December 2017 to January 2019

North America 

Plant reopening

NSG Group/Pilkington’s Ottawa, Illinois, float glass plant reopened in December 2017. A tornado damaged the plant in February 2017, and the plant’s furnace started cold repair in May 2017.


Asahi Glass Co.’s plant located in Church Hill, Tennessee, experienced a molten glass leak in early February 2018 that resulted in firefighters being called to the scene. One employee was transported to the hospital after sustaining injuries including heat exhaustion and minor burns. The leak occurred when the No. 2 float line was being drained in preparation for rebuilding.

Plant construction

In July 2018, the council of Guelph/Eramosa Township in Ontario, Canada, passed a motion to reject the application for Xinyi Glass's planned float glass facility in the location. The rejection was based on the argument that the facility will not meet dry use standards, as the plant would use over 400,000 gallons of water per day.

Line reopening

In July 2018, Vitro Architectural Glass restarted Line 1 at its Carlisle, Pennsylvania, float facility. The line experienced a glass leak on Aug. 17, 2017, resulting in a complete cold repair of the line.

New coater

Vitro Architectural Glass launched its new jumbo magnetron sputtered vacuum deposition coater at its Wichita Falls, Texas, manufacturing plant in August 2018. The coater allows the manufacturer to produce energy-efficient glass in sizes 112.5 percent larger than standard size lites.

On Oct. 11, 2018, Guardian Glass inaugurated its new jumbo coater, located at its Carleton, Michigan, facility. Guardian started coating its float glass with Guardian SunGuard SuperNeutral 68 HT coating. This jumbo coater is Guardian’s 12th globally and the company’s first in North America.

Planned float facility

In late October 2018, NSG Group selected Troy Township, Ohio, as the location for its new glass production facility in the United States. The new plant will support the Group’s plan to expand production capacity of online transparent conductive oxide coated glass to respond to growing demand in the solar market. Construction will begin in the spring of 2019, and it is expected the plant will be operational in the second half of 2020.

Planned facility

According to local reporting in January, Xinyi is considering a few locations for its new Canadia float plant. The company is reportedly looking at Stratford, London, Welland and Amherstburg, all in the province of Ontario, as potential new locations.

Processing Center

Fuyao North America Inc. will open a new processing center in Greenville County, South Carolina, according to a statement from Governor Henry McMaster's office published in January. The company will invest $16.1 million in the new 182,000-square-foot processing center with light production capabilities

Plant Inauguration

Saint-Gobain will inaugurate its third float glass plant, located in Chennai, India, according to local reporting. The factory complex, known as the World Glass Complex, hosts two float glass lines with a total production capacity of about 1,650 tons per day.


Plant construction

In October 2018, Guardian Glass held a groundbreaking celebration for its new plant in Częstochowa, Poland. Announced last August, the plant will be located next to the company’s existing facility and produce float and coated glass. The new facility is expected to begin operations in early 2020 and will create more than 150 new jobs.


Şişecam Group acquired the Sangalli Vetro Manfredonia facility in Italy. Acquired in June of last year, this represents the Group’s second flat glass plant in Italy.

In January, Saint-Gobain Group in Poland modernized its float glass production line at its facility in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The investment will increase Saint-Gobain Poland’s float glass production potential for the construction sector by 25 percent, say company officials.

BGF Glass Co. opened a plant in Bangkok, Thailand, in November 2017.

In November 2017, Nasir Float Glass Industries Ltd. announced plans for a new plant in Bangladesh.

Construction began on Azerfloat’s new float glass line and production facility, located in Sumgait, Azerbaijan, as of December 2017.

Turkmen Glass Products launched production at a new float facility in Turkmenistan in February of last year. The plant will be the largest plant in Central Asia, according to the company.


Trakya Cam Sanayii A.Ş., a Şişecam Group company, bought a further 49.8 percent stake in HNG Float Glass Ltd. its flat glass manufacturer affiliate in India, for $85.4 million last June. Şişecam Group, which has been in a fifty-fifty partnership since 2013, now owns 99.8 percent of the company shares with this buy-out.

Joint venture

Deli China and JW SEZ Group formed a joint venture for a planned factory in Pakistan in October 2018.

Investment fund

In December 2018, China Glass is reported to have created an investment fund for Eurasian glass factories.
