QUALITY METALCRAFTS/AMERICLAD
Kaiser Permanente // San Diego

The newly built Kaiser Permanente healthcare center in San Diego, was designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, placing it in an elite group of few other healthcare facilities. To help meet the high-performance goals, Quality Metalcrafts, americlad.com, supplied approximately 40,000 square feet of 1/8-inch aluminum plate panels that conform to LEED standards and fit within the building’s overall design, according to Paul Anderson, business development manager, Quality Metalcrafts. The panels were finished by Linetec, linetec.com, with 70 percent PVDF paint in Platinum Mica Sunstorm and Light Blue metallic. The Quality Metalcrafts team worked closely with installer Architectural Glass and Aluminum, aga-ca.com. “Like many projects today, deadlines are a huge factor to overcome,” says Anderson. “By finding new ways to become more efficient and utilizing the ease of installation of our panel systems, we were able to hit our deadlines and deliver a quality product.” CO Architects, coarchitects.com, was the project architect, and Hensel Phelps, henselphelps.com, the general contractor.

Designed to be a focal point of the University of Alabama campus, located in Huntsville, Alabama, the new Huntsville Student Service Center features strategically implemented sun-control products to provide a modern aesthetic and meet the daylighting goals of Nola Vanpeursem, nvparchitects.com, the project architect. Architectural Grilles and Sunshades Inc., agsshade.com, manufactured combination single, horizontal airfoil blades, horizontal airfoil sunshades and a custom 10-inch deep horizontal sunshade, all in Class 1, clear anodic finish, for the project. Strategic placement of the products in high-exposure areas allowed the team to filter the natural light while also reducing glare and solar heat gain, ensuring occupant comfort without obstructing views through the use of blinds, according to Holly Seidel, inside sales and marketing manager, AGS Inc. “The sunshades were split up to about 30 in small sections wrapped around the building and we had to make sure they all lined up,” says Seidel. The design challenge, compounded by being a late addition to the project, was overcome through close collaboration with the glazing contractor, North Alabama Glass, northalabamaglass.com. “We worked with [North Alabama Glass] to get approval of the design quickly so that we could secure all required materials,” says Seidel. “This allowed us to fabricate and deliver finished product as promptly as possible after field measurements were provided.”Woodward Construction & Design Inc., woodward-construction.com, was the general contractor.
