The Architectural Billings Index closed 2018 with a slight easing, registering a score of 50.4, down from November’s 54.7. Compiled by the American Institute of Architects, the index's analysts caution that despite worry about a possible 2019 economic slowdown, December’s score follows a year of consistent growth for architectural billings. Backlogs have only increased, as have new project inquiries and the value of design contracts, they say.

Billings at commercial/industrial and institutional firms posted stronger scores for December. Firms in the northeast and Midwest recorded healthy billings, while billings for the South and West eased slightly.
