Following last month’s negative reading, April’s Architectural Building Index, compiled by the American Institute of Architects, returned to a positive score of 50.5. Despite the upturn, only a slight majority of architectural firms reported an increase in firm billings, though new project inquiries and the value of new signed design contracts both showed growth this last month.

Architectural firms located in the South were the only ones to experience billings growth nationwide; other regional firms experienced the third straight month of softening billings. By specialization, commercial/industrial firms experienced the most decline.
