The Architectural Billings Index, compiled by the American Institute of Architects, began the year on a positive note, registering at 54.7 in January, up from December 2017’s reading of 52.8. The score also represents the highest ABI in January since 2007. The continued growth in billings was mirrored by a similar uptick in the number of firms reporting new design contracts, maintaining a 15-month trajectory of new project activity.

Billings remained strong across most geographic regions, with the exception of the Northeast, which saw growth ease in December and soften further into January 2018. The report suggests that the decreases in billings may be due to the cold snap that engulfed much of the Northeast in the early part of the month.
