After experiencing a slight easing at the end of 2018, the Architectural Billings Index demonstrated growth in January, suggesting strong billings at the beginning of 2019. The Index, compiled by the American Institute of Architects, recovered to 55.3 after December’s 50.4. January’s score is the highest in more than two years. Despite this growth, firms specializing in commercial and/or industrial work saw growth ease slightly, though all firms reported improved business conditions.

Firms in the South and West lead in strong billings, with northeastern firms posting strong billings for the fifth month in a row. AIA’s report also surveyed respondents regarding the government shutdown. About 12 percent of companies reported a direct impact on at least one project, and about 10 percent said the shutdown impacted them through its effect on contractors or clients.
