August’s Architectural Billings Index, compiled by the American Institute of Architects, dropped to 47.2, a score that signals a decline in aggregate design activity, say analysts. The fall was paralleled in the national score for new design contracts, which registered at 47.2. Analysts say that the market softening is causing architectural firms to consider international projects.

Region: Midwest firms experienced the worst of market softening, while firms in the West on average reported growth in August.

Specialty: After a sharp downturn in July, commercial firms experienced another drop in design activity in August.
