FeneTech Inc. is working to develop an Internet of Things communication standard for the industry. Fenestration Machine Language, or FENml for short, will respond to the current challenges with IoT and Industry 4.0, namely that there are very few existing standards, according to Ron Crowl, president of FeneTech.

"IoT / Industry 4.0 are buzzwords that can actually add value to our mutual customers as well as create opportunities for all of us in the supply chain," says Crowl. "[But], those that are developing IoT technology into their machinery are developing standalone applications to provide localized feedback. While local feedback is better than no visibility, the challenge becomes one of managing a vast array of individual application data to gain value."

FENml centralizes IoT data in a cloud-based system. It is an open standard, allowing each machine manufacturer the creativity to provide the most value possible for their specific machinery, according to Crowl.

To provide more information on FENml and Industry 4.0, FeneTech is hosting informational meetings during GlassBuild 2017, on Sept. 12 and 13.

  • Tuesday Sept. 12, 9-10 a.m., in Room B210 (2nd level) at the Georgia World Congress Center.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2-3 p.m. in Room B210 (2nd level) at the Georgia World Congress Center.
