The new Public Safety Complex in Tavares, Florida, features Winco's 3350 series fixed windows.

The city of Tavares, Florida, held a grand opening of its newly constructed Public Safety Complex. The two-story, 38,527-square-foot facility houses the city’s police, fire and Emergency Operations Center. This state-of-the-art complex is a modern day fortress — designed under FEMA’s tough Essential Facility requirements, Risk Category IV, and built to remain operable during emergency situations.

Winco’s 3350 series fixed windows were installed with framing and glazing designed to meet FEMA P-361 standards for tornado and hurricane safety ratings and to withstand 180 mph winds with flying debris impact testing of a 15-pound 2- by 4-inch missile traveling at 100 mph. The extraordinary strength of the windows is accomplished utilizing laminated glazing and ½-inch polycarbonate.

“The windows are a significant part of the project,” says Richard Keith, fire chief. “During emergencies, we’ll be protected by the enhanced glazing. For the rest of the time, those same windows allow natural light to flow into the buildings, creating a welcoming environment for our staff and citizens.”

The Tavares Public Safety Complex has everything to handle any emergency. One end is anchored by the police department and the other end is a dedicated building to Fire Station No. 28. The complex also houses the Emergency Operations Center and is designed for use as a storm shelter.

“The City has received compliments on the WINCO windows,”  says Keith. “People comment about the pleasing blue tint and on how 'delicate' they look. Little do they know that these windows are an integral part of the security envelope of our highly strengthened exterior.”
