The 10-story Baptist Health Care at Brent Lane, a new health care campus located in Pensacola, Florida, showcases the range of glass’ protective powers, not only as impact-tested glazing systems but also as systems designed to provide comfort and healing to patients.

Located in a region with hurricanes and tropical storms, the team went beyond code requirements, says Steve Schohan, marketing and communications director, YKK AP. Multiple YKK AP impact-resistant and blast-mitigating systems were used throughout the space to achieve the protection and resilience standards required. The facilities are rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and severe flooding, while remaining functional even through power and water disruptions.

Beyond protection, the building design also connects with, and reflects, the surrounding Florida landscape. Expansive windows at the hospital entrance offer clear views of the park square, and handcrafted materials like terracotta, wood, bronze and terrazzo are utilized throughout the building to promote comfort and healing.

The building’s design also incorporates sustainable features, with consideration for building orientation, selection of glass, and stormwater-recovery for irrigation and a cooling tower water.
