Visitors to the Donum Estate in Sonoma, California, can enjoy wine tasting under the rainbow-colored glass canopy of the outdoor Vertical Panorama Pavilion. Each of the canopy’s 24 transparent hues represents “a variable influencing wine production, making the pavilion a representation of everything happening on the site,” say company officials.

“The Vertical Panorama Pavilion showcases the power glass has to transform an environment,” says Glass Magazine Awards judge Kayla Natividad, architectural technical services engineer, NSG Pilkington.

Though decorative, the canopy’s outdoor location means it also had to withstand the elements.

The pavilion’s 832 glass panels are laminated with Eastman’s Vanceva color PVB interlayers, and have an additional solar coating on the inside for solar protection and durability. The design considered regional climate conditions, and a scale model was built and tested in a wind tunnel to optimize the cooling effect of the prevailing southwesterly wind.

To ensure a seamless interface between the glass panels and the steel framing, the team turned to Grasshopper software to optimize the design of the steel and glass structure, which was fabricated and installed by Hahner Technik.

“It’s a brilliant use of color and design, creating a truly unique space in an exterior setting,” says Glass Magazine Awards judge Brian J. Tobias, marketing manager, Tubelite.
