Xinyi Glass Canada Says it will Suspend Plans for Stratford Float Plant
Xinyi Glass Canada released a statement on Feb. 15 saying that it would suspend its plans to build a float plant in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, “indefinitely.” The statement outline the potential benefits the project could have brought to the area, and cited local pushback, and the city council’s decision to defer action on the project as contributing to this move. “Xinyi Canada is greatly disappointed that as of February 15, 2021, Stratford City Council remained unable to provide approval of the Cost Sharing Agreement between the City of Stratford and Xinyi Canada, which is critical for the timely development of the proposed float glass facility,” officials say, in the statement.
The float glass plant was first proposed in November 2020, and received pushback from local residents. The City of Stratford had decided to defer action on the plant in early January, citing COVID-19 lockdown measures, according to reporting in the Stratford Beacon Herald. As of last Tuesday, Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson said the city had not been notified of the company’s plan to suspend the project.
